Neg1 Intro

Apologies if some of the coding/layout has gone slightly awry on this page...it will be fixed, but enjoy the read....I have now carried out some html amendments, & thus should be fixed.

A Mass of Ideas Flowing.....A negotiated project

My next module for Uni is a project negotiated with my lecturer's, & from all the research & notition, will now actually lead into my Negotiated2 module.
I have amassed a variety of 'game' ideas with, after initial research, quite a number seeming worthy of taking further. Therefore, I have collated my ideas, mindmapped, researched via a multitude of media, presented to peers, made contact with companies & employees, & then further investigation to winnow the list, & select the most suited.

This project has opened my creative mind to a myriad of concepts, covering a wide range of genres & styles of game; from expansive big-budget to simple online games, & adult-only to fun kids-cartoon; waking me up in the early hours to put pen to paper & ensure that I actually write my ideas down! These ideas have accumulated in my sketch/note books, somewhat, & am researching into each one further for this project, analysing which is the most suitable to take into Neg2.

I will list a selection of my initial ideas, & then follow with details & images of the research I undertook, followed through, & then analysed to see if/which was most suitable for this module whilst still, in addition, achieving my own objectives.

I have tried to incorporate all the Neg 1 Projects into this page, however, transferring all the data from the other tabs created errors, & although I tried to remedy these, it was proving far too time-consuming, & unworkable; all errors were not omited. Therefore I have links here to the pages/projects:

Dec 12/Jan 13 Journal:
It has taken me some time to get my head around being back in study; far longer than I anticipated but fortunately an invaluable friend had forewarned me that it might, from her own recent experience doing her Masters, & so I was prepared - a little!
However, last week I was doubting myself, questioning if I can really do this, or even if I am on the right path with so much to learn & show. Common sense should have prevailed at this time, & realisation that I was coming down with flu under a full moon, & thus to STOP fretting!! The positive result though is that it made me divulge my worries to Simon & Ian whilst we were looking at Maya & my projects, & this helped me to analyse & put some things back into perspective; see what I had already achieved, & brought me back to fashion & simplifying projects.
I have a myriad of ideas for games, concept etc & amass inspiring things daily, taking notes upon notes to refer to & follow up.....but suddenly reminded myself that this is an ‘Art’ degree & I need to do more sketching, more 'visual's' as Marisse kindly pointed out to me, & do it daily. This concerned me initially but I understand that some days I CAN sketch & be happy with my drawings yet other days - well those sketches get hidden!

I was also trying to bring everything I thought about, every game or character idea into an original fashion context, & basically some of those ideas do not fit fashion, & being original can be tougher on oneself! I was simply trying to build on what I already have, to help create that niche, & produce an amazing portfolio building on, without losing, the fashion & design I already possess! This created another mammoth task, & I struggled thus making it harder for myself but now have a clearer head & am looking at all my research I have done/doing to submit for Neg 1, which will invariably lead me to produce a reel on Maya ‘ncloth’ to show cloth dynamics for my Neg2...

Shared on Pinterest via FB, & quite apt wording!
I have a feeling the beach & ocean will have a strong part in my inspiration, as I take photographs when running on the beach & save to Facebook & Pinterest, & also share images with words/sayings...plus movies & music:
.
Jellyfish: Tracey Valliere-Evans
All inspire me in my design, whether fabric or a dress!

  • Rhianna & Drake video directed by Yoann Lemoine (now known as Woodkid) for Take Care below, creates in both music & symbolism a rhythmic movement with creatures & dancers, simple yet strong style & shades, & features a bull, blue jay & captured a deep emotion with the whole tone. Simply said by one Blog: "The video has a very intimate, humbling and delicate vibe with minimal visuals which allows us to focus on them. It comes off as an artistic therapy session where Drake reveals his inner feelings all while Rhianna listens and reacts to his subtle emotions. Simplicity at its best."

Researching this video, lead me to Woodkid's new video, which, visually for me, epitomised game inspiration...I then discovered that there are some video's on YouTube putting this song to Assassin's Creed III trailer!
Fashion may not be as exciting as all my other ideas, but is more concise, building a niche skill & portfolio, & also more do-able in my time frame...

Leading to Neg2......

Nov/Dec Research into other designers: I am looking at other designers work, websites, show reels, sketches, portfolio's, bio's etc to encompass exactly what is being done in games & design. Translating these into a current synopsis to then analyse what I think will be useful for me to acknowledge & develop in my work, to help with what I see may be trending in the future. This is to assist me to be in a far better position to answer questions in my own research for this project - & where I am travelling to.... Looking at various styles of clothes & fabric design by game designers:

Henry Watson, recent graduate showcasing his skills in Maya ncloth: follow link to see his show reel! This has inspired me to return to my knowledge & skill base of fashion, & to concentrate on this niche, developing & building a specialism in this creative digital tool for the gaming industry, which of course may open other doors, in other creative industries!
The above Disney video is for animation, but I am watching the dress, & wondering how that has been made to move & drape, & how can I make mine better:

We present a novel algorithm for accurately detecting all contacts, including self-collisions, between deformable models. We precompute a chromatic decomposition of a mesh into non-adjacent primitives using graph coloring algorithms. This enables us to check for collisions between non-adjacent primitives using a linear-time culling algorithm."

I have always loved looking at sketches, seeing where ideas are initially conceptualised, or simply the bare bones, or quick random 'penmanship'....this highlights that I must spend time setting up my Photoshop & tablet! Other links, pages, images etc I have looked at in my research.
